Email copywriting is overrated — do this instead

I’m sitting here in Double T Cafe, Koh Samui… sipping on an iced Cappucino… staring at the tropical rain pouring down outside.

One of the reasons I came here to Thailand is because I wanted to finally spend some time in the sun.

But as it turns out—

It’s the start of the freaking rainy season.

(That’s why you gotta do your research fellas.)

The worst part?

My family at home is sending me pictures of themselves sunbathing beneath a brilliant sky at a comfortable 24 degrees. 😑

And I’m here sweating my balls off at 32°C.

Well…

You can’t have everything.

As a little bit of compensation, I had a very successful product launch a couple days back.

I launched my FULL Organic Leads Funnel I use to attract myself and my clients 5-10 quality inbound leads every single month.

The real kicker?

I gave it away for FREE.

So check it out here if you haven’t already – I promise you’ll get value out of it (and you might even have a chuckle here and there).

Also… hello to the new people on this list. I highly appreciate you being here & reading this. Genuinely do.

But let’s talk about some bizniz stuff.

More specifically:

Email Marketing.

If you’ve been around the block for a while you’ll know just how powerful this email marketing thing can be.

I recently heard a story about a fricking magazine business doing more than $10M/year from their newsletter.

Pretty good, eh?

So it’s safe to say that email marketing is a MUST if you’re trying to acquire customers online.

But most brands get this wrong.

They write some emails or hire an email copywriter who uses sleazy sales tactics to force people into buying.

But all that does is, well, lead to them…

…looking like a fucking dickhead.

No bueno.

What they don’t understand?

The thing that makes people buy is (usually) NOT some sleazy copywriting “trick” or a “persuasive story email”.

In fact…

I’d say 95% of email sales boil down to 2 things.

  • Offer
  • And Trust

Let’s talk about offer first.

If yo’ offer ain’t no good… yo’ ain’t gone make no sales.

Sounds obvious, doesn’t it?

Then why are so many brands still trying to (somehow) sell a mediocre offer that doesn’t JOLT the prospect into taking action?

Frankly, I don’t know.

They try to compensate by curing the SYMPTOM (low email sales), instead of fixing the ROOT PROBLEM that’s causing the symptoms (bad offer).

That’s why…

One of the first things I do for my clients is take a deep dive into their offer to see if there are any leaky holes & how we can fix them. That alone cures (I’d estimate) 80% of lead gen problems.

But there’s one more factor—

TRUST

See, trust is one of those hidden metrics that can’t really be measured but accounts for a HUGE amount of your business’s success.

But how do you build trust?

Well, there’s 2 components:

  1. Authority – being perceived as an expert and someone who can fix your ICP’s problems
  2. Likeability – people resonating with YOU as a person/brand

If written extensively about authority (and will continue to do so).

(If you want a detailed breakdown of how to position yourself as an authority in your niche… go check out my Organic Funnel Course that I already mentioned).

Let’s dive deeper into likeability.

See, there’s a reason why I told you about the rainy season here in Thailand. Or why I told you I was sipping a medium roast iced cappuccino (which it’s way too late to drink – but idgaf now)…

I gave you a window into my world.

I shared my emotional states & life circumstances so you could relate to me.

Now, I wasn’t thinking:

“Hmm… how can I manipulate them into liking me?”

Hell nah.

That would come across as super weird and would probably achieve the opposite of you resonating with me.

I was just writing about what I felt and thought. That simple.

Here’s the thing about likeability:

It doesn’t make you much money in the short run. But building it over months and years is what leads to a deep connection between your reader and your brand.

Which is ultimately where BIG money is made.

The most successful email marketers aren’t necessarily the best email copywriters…

They’re the ones who’ve built the strongest connection with their list.

So… to sum it all up, here’s how to make obscene amounts of money from email marketing:

  • Have an irresistible, flaming-hot offer.
  • Build a strong list by sharing personal insights into you and your life (this is also true for big corporations btw – why else do you constantly see “Jeff from Calendly” or “Tyler from Beehiiv” pop up in your inbox).

These two factors alone will make you outsell even the best email copywriters who haven’t got these 2 figured out.

Right, this was a bit of a longer one. Hope you got some value out of it.

Tim <3
