One sentence that drives me up the wall:
“[Insert famous guru] told me to do X! Why isn’t it working for me?”
This is one of the most common problems I see in marketing: People blindly copying some “expert’s” advice and expecting to get the same outcomes.
That’s simply not how the world works.
Marketing is always…
This means that what might have worked for that famous guru might not work for you.
Why, you ask?
Well, let me ask you:
Do you have the same starting conditions as them? Do you have the same skillset? Do you have the same track record? Do you have the same name and reputation? Do you sell the same product? Are you even in the same market?
Probably no.
Here’s the deal:
The market is highly dynamic – and often unpredictable. This means that what worked for person X in time period Y, will probably not work for your specific market and timing.
Blindly following anyone’s advice can be deadly for your marketing.
The – slightly uncomfortable – lesson is this:
That’s why marketing is hard.
It’s no “one size fits all” system that you can plug into any business. It always depends on your goals and your situation.
Here’s the problem with most so-called “marketers” or “copywriters”:
They don’t understand the word ‘context’.
They don’t even bother learning about your unique product and the specific ways it helps people, and instead, just use their “plug-and-play” systems and strategies… No wonder they can’t deliver results.
I do it differently.
